April Newsletter 2020

Hello From General Manager Nancy

img

If you saw my club update video on our Facebook page, you already know how strange it is for me to work at the club while it is completely empty, and very cold inside! The staff and members of ABAC have been one of the biggest parts of my life for the past 16 years, and I miss everyone terribly. We have received so many words of encouragement from you, and we know how much you miss the club too.

We are working hard to give members up-to-date information. Hopefully everyone has gotten a couple of emails regarding dues. Please remember that membership dues are on freeze until we reopen the club. No one is required to pay for April, May, or however long we are closed. I apologize that the current statements were a little confusing and did not show a credit for your April dues that were charged, but your online balance does show the correct total.

I can't wait to get the club back open! Please be safe and stay positive. We will get through this and be better than ever!!

A SPECIAL THANKS!!

At the beginning of our closure, some members e-mailed me stating that they would like to continue their dues to help the club with critical expenses and to keep paying staff as long as we could. It was something that we didn't first think of, but we put our heads together and sent an e-mail to all members giving them the option. I'm so happy to say with the help of members and California Athletic Clubs, we are able to pay our entire staff a full salary for the entire month of April! I can't tell you as a GM how thankful I am that we can continue to help our staff as we go through this crazy event. I loved being a part of all the e-mails you sent, so thank you! I will be forever grateful to our amazing owners for the sacrifices they have made too, in halting all bills to them, and working diligently to find all programs available to help us. -Nancy

Let's Keep Moving!

We are thrilled to introduce a schedule of Zoom Fitness Classes taught by our very own ABAC instructors! We will send a weekly schedule. These classes are live (you can say hi to the instructors if you want!) and will be recorded, so they can be watched anytime in the future. They will be available on our new YouTube Channel. We are excited to have everything all in one place for you.

Along with our Facebook and Instagram pages, you can enjoy cool videos from our staff. I also hope everyone tries out the Les Mills link listed below. Les Mills has over 60 great classes for free to try.

Unfortunately, there's not much to say about Aquatics right now, other than we are still
cleaning the pool and making sure it stays nice for when we are able to return to it! I know
many of you may not have access to pools, but another way to stay in swimming shape is to eat
healthy meals until you can get back in the water. Here is one of my favorite, healthy easy-to-
make recipes. It's a modified taco salad that does not require any bottled or complex dressings.
Cook extra taco meat and keep in the refrigerator, and a fresh salad can be thrown together in
a pinch.

Chopped Taco Salad
1 pound ground turkey
Your favorite taco seasoning OR make your own
o 1 tbsp. chili powder
o 1 tsp. garlic powder
o 1 tsp. sweet paprika
o 1 tsp. cumin
o 1 tsp. dried cilantro
o ½ tsp. salt
¼ cup water or chicken stock
1 can black beans, drained
2 cups spinach, chopped
1 small tomato, diced
½ red bell pepper, chopped
½ small sweet red onion, chopped
½ cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
Juice from 1 lime
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. Trader Joe's Chili Lime spice
¼ tsp. salt
Crushed tortilla chips and avocado slices to garnish

1. Brown turkey in a pan. Just before it is done, drain any fat and add taco spice. Stir the
meat to coat, and add water or stock and simmer until most of the water is evaporated.
2. Add beans to meat and stir until warmed.
3. Add chopped veggies to a large bowl. Add lime juice and sprinkle with chili powder, TJ's
spice, and salt. Toss well to coat.
4. Add cheese and a generous scoop of taco meat and toss once more.
5. Top with tortilla chips and avocado slices

MyZone Challenges

img

Remember that your MyZone belts work even though you aren't at the club! Just wear your
belt and make sure it connects to the app on your device and it will upload your workouts. In April there are TWO challenges to help keep you motivated!
1. The first is a global challenge put on by MyZone. All you have to do is earn at least 1300 MEPS in April and you are automatically entered into this one. One $5000 grand prize will be awarded in a random drawing, as well as ten runner-up prizes of $500. MyZone will notify the winners of this contest.
2. The second challenge is a club challenge. Wear your belt for the entire month of April and earn as many MEPS as you can. Every 100 MEPS will earn a raffle ticket, up to a maximum of 50tickets. You also can earn BONUS tickets by posting a screen shot of your MyZone workout summary and posting it to Facebook or Instagram and tagging Avila Bay Club. You'll receive one bonus ticket for each day that you post an image of your workout (one ticket per day, even if you do multiple workouts in the day). In the first week of May, we'll have a drawing for
A free private training session and a free MyZone belt to give a friend. It is so fun to see friends using the belt too. You can even start your own challenges with each other!
GOOD LUCK!

Hello From Amy - Change and Butterflies

img

I was out in my garden this week, and noticed this beautiful monarch butterfly. Remember when you were in grade school and like most of us, we studied and watched the caterpillar as it started to form its cocoon, and then emerge later as a beautiful monarch butterfly?

I think that is what is happening now, as we all are experiencing COVID-19 challenges. It is bound to happen…CHANGE! Change is the one constant for all of us. For some of us, change is exciting and motivating. To many of us, (like me) it is scary, foreign, and actually demotivates me. This virus is unknown. Many people have the fear of getting the virus, some are sick and recovering at home, or worse, hospitalized, or dying. Some of us are unsure of our future paychecks and paying our bills. For most of us, it is just the common daily luxuries that we enjoy; going to the club and taking your favorite cycle or dance class, going out to restaurants, visiting and hugging friends, playing tennis, going for a walk without having to have 6' apart from each other, or just keep to our daily routine that we have become accustomed to.

Here is the good thing about COVID-19 challenges. It definitely made us REBOOT and RE-EXAMINE our routines, our time, and maybe even our values. It has brought out our vulnerabilities. When we are vulnerable, it makes us "get real" with ourselves. I have seen my neighbors, and community that would not necessarily reach out in the past, and now are striking up conversations, or communicating by Facebook to say hello, or offer to help each other. Many of my friends are making masks to give out to the healthcare community. Many are donating money for the many good causes. Maybe most importantly, politics is pushed to the side for a while. We are on one team for the time being. My hope is that we come out on the other side of this crisis to a more connected world. That we learn from each other and be united in fighting the virus to find the vaccine to save lives of so many. My hope is that we have a deeper understanding and appreciation not only for all the first responders, medical staff, volunteers, grocery workers, and truckers, but for us all! We can all learn from each other to create that new vaccine, and to help make our people and planet healthier. Let's make a beautiful butterfly!

I look forward to seeing you all again to enjoy our hikes, tennis, workouts, or a simple cup of coffee and a nice conversation. Take care everyone. -Amy

Message From Diane

 img

We asked our spa manager Diane for a way to help deal with stress right now, since we are all missing our massages! She suggested a breathing technique:
The 4-7-8 breathing technique, also known as "relaxing breath," involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. This breathing pattern aims to reduce anxiety or help people get to sleep. Some proponents claim that the method helps people get to sleep in 1 minute. There is limited scientific research to support this method, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that this type of deep, rhythmic breathing is relaxing and may help ease people into sleep.

To use the 4-7-8 technique, focus on the following breathing pattern:

  • empty the lungs of air.
  • breathe in quietly through the nose for 4 seconds.
  • hold the breath for a count of 7 seconds.
  • exhale forcefully through the mouth, pursing the lips and making a "whoosh" sound, for 8 seconds.
  • repeat the cycle up to 4 times.

Message From Michael

Missing Tennis! Every day has become a mental test for all of us with adapting to our current situation and preparing for whatever is coming next. I'm really looking for ways to stay fresh and change it up through getting outside to places where there are no people, and hitting tennis balls against a backboard. My goals are to stay healthy, present, plan to implement new ideas on future projects, and not feeling sorry about my situation or being stuck in the past.

I'm really trying to do that deep dive of focusing within and trying to understand how much of my thoughts are ego, how much it is fear of missing out, and then missing all my daily routines that used to be normal. My hope for everyone coming out of this is for people to come together. I hope it breaks down barriers between people. We see that we are all vulnerable and we're all in this together. I think a deeper connection through community is the best solution in moving forward. I'd like to see people working together and being more health conscious. This is a disease/virus that affects your health, and the stronger you are the better. You can see the communities like San Luis Obispo County and our Avila Bay Club family that are stronger than others and in return have had better success with healing from it. Good luck and see you all soon on the tennis court or near a remote/isolated beach somewhere…..

Michael's Juice Recipes

img

Four Juices that will improve your tennis striking ability, footwork, eyesight and boost immunity during the COVID-19 isolation.

Orange and grapefruit
Vitamin C has antioxidants and other properties that protect your cells from substances that damage the body. A deficiency of vitamin C can lead to delayed wound healing, inability to properly fight infections, and impaired immune response. Fortunately, this citrus juice contains more than enough of your daily intake of vitamin C.

Homemade tomato juice
The best way to be sure your tomato juice is fresh and without added ingredients is to make it yourself. The best part? No juicer or blender required although you'll want to strain the bits and pieces through a sieve. Tomatoes are rich in folate, which helps lower your risk of infections.

Kale, tomato, celery, and horseradish (optional)
Kale is a staple for many green juices. Instead of cutting the taste of kale with fruits, this juice recipe uses tomato and celery juice, adding more than enough vitamin A. The horseradish in this recipe may also provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Blend it up for a drink that'll awaken your senses.

Beet, carrot, ginger, and turmeric
This juice has four root vegetables that'll help your immune system and decrease inflammatory symptoms. Inflammation is often an immune response to infections. It can cause flu or cold symptoms like a runny nose, coughs, and body aches. People who have rheumatoid arthritis may especially benefit from drinking this juice, as the turmeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory effect.
