May Newsletter 2020
Hello From Nancy
I am writing to you from the club, which feels more alive than it did last month. We are working hard to get the club ready for everyone to return to. Many things have been cleaned, removed, repaired, and / or renovated. Staff has worked hard to stay safe, while still trying to make club improvements. Things are going to look quite different when we reopen, with equipment moved around to provide physical distancing and as much utilization of outdoor spaces as possible. Our revised D&S Plan is being finalized (disinfecting and sanitizing), as we work closely with our expert cleaning consultants. We are blessed to have reservation systems in place that will help us control people coming and going for tennis, the lap pool, group fitness classes, and possibly the workout rooms. It will be more of a place to come work out than a social environment, for a while.
It is especially strange for me to not be planning our annual Mother's Day Brunch right now. This would have been my 15th year in a row being a part of such an amazing event. Even my mom always knew where to come if we wanted to be together for Mother's Day, and they always had a great time. I look forward to being able to do it again next year, and wish all our special club moms a very happy day with your family - whether it be a Zoom call, lawn chairs spread around the yard, or being able to actually be physically together. We will get through these hard times and really appreciate being together again! - Nancy Terrell
A SPECIAL THANKS!!
It is hard to put in words how grateful we are that some members have volunteered to continue to pay dues while we have been closed. Along with help from the SBA PPP Program, we have been able to continue to pay every single staff person their full pay, and keep the club operating. This kind of club has huge overhead expenses, and many of those can not just go away. We are definitely getting through it together!
Happy Mother's Day To All Our Amazing Moms!
We are selling Gift Cards for Mother's Day. After we open, the gift cards can be used throughout the club:
Salon/Spa: Hair, Nails, Facials, Waxing and Fitness Training, Oasis Grille, etc.
Email [email protected] with the gift card amount, the recipient's name, the address and we will charge it to your account. She will mail it to you, to them, or deliver it to a front porch in the Five Cities / SLO area.
It's super easy!
Be Well and Stay Healthy
Social Bingo
Saturday, May 9
4 pm - 5 pm on Zoom!
Since we're all trapped inside for a while, we thought it would be a fun break to play some social Bingo! We can do it over Zoom, too! On May 9th from 4-5 pm, please join Travis and Mitch for a fun, FREE, Bingo game! Here's all you need to do to play—any time before the game starts, go to https://letsplaybingo.io/generator to create and print out as many Bingo cards as you like (it will randomly generate cards for you). On the 9th, login to the Zoom meeting by using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84805925958?pwd=bGJ4SUxYeCtXaVcvejh1UkRsOTRCQT09. There are no prizes other than getting the pleasure of yelling out BINGO!! before anyone else—it's just a fun way to get to see each other and socialize a little bit. This event is open to members and guests.
Special News From Spa Director Diane
It's time for a new adventure! We're ready to move to four seasons, mountains, pine trees, and beauty in Arizona. Flagstaff is often called "The City of Seven Wonders" because it sits in the midst of the Coconino National Forest and is surrounded by the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater National Monument and the San Francisco Peaks.
I'm so blessed having been surrounded by so many incredible people at the club. Watching members live their lives with purpose, friendship, laughter and love.
I want to thank Nancy for the amazing opportunities at the club and the wonderful managers Travis, Amy, Patty, Kristin, Mitch, Michael, Johnny, and Arturo for fun filled meetings, laughter, positive energy, and for friendship. You're the best team I've ever worked with and I will never forget you.
To the talented spa/salon - thank you for giving your best to all our members and guests, and for loving your skill.
To the wonderful front desk staff - thank you for all of your hard work in assisting the Spa/Salon and all of my last minute needs.
To the members and employees - thank you for supporting our Salon/Spa. I will miss seeing you all and sharing my love for massage through these years.
My heart is filled with gratitude and love. ❤️Diane
We love you so much Diane and will miss you terribly! Thank you for all of your dedication to everyone. You have such a big heart, and are such a giver. We hope you guys have so much fun in your new chapter in Arizona!

A Note From Kristin
Wow! What a crazy few weeks it has been! I myself have had to really adapt to this non-gym environment and it has taken a bit of time to get into the groove. The first few weeks I felt a bit paralized and not sure what to do for my fitness routine and as a result I lost some of my gusto and gained a few lbs (is wine a food group?). My love is lifting weights and I only have a few at home. Slowly I have developed a new routine and feel incredible about it! It has been so inspiring to me to watch many of you making an EXTRA effort to get in better shape and be healthy. Nothing like a pandemic to make you realize how important our health is. I have been thankful for the zoom classes and I tend to use the recorded versions on our YouTube channel more than anything else so I can do the classes when I have time. It has been an incredible opportunity to see all of our instructors and I so appreciate the effort and time they have put into making this happen from home. I have really enjoyed long beautiful walks on the beach - some of which I have been doing social distancing with friends.
As we have started to settle in everything will change once again when our beautiful Avila Bay Athletic Club reopens. Things will be a bit different but one thing will always remain the same. My love for our dear community and the incredible caliber of our members who I call friends. I miss all of your beautiful faces and I know we will be together in some capacity very soon. I may be the fitness director but I look to all of you for inspiration and you always deliver. Keep shining and being healthy and enjoy this GIANT virtual hug from me! - Kristin Alexander
Free Virtual Training Session!
As we head into a different environment, at least for a little while, we want to offer you all a free virtual training session with one of our personal trainers! I will personally connect you with one of our very qualified trainers to work with you in the comfort of your own home. Not tech savvy? We can walk you through that part as well. If you can email you can work online and have a great custom workout session with one of us. You can choose from flexibility and balance training, core and functional training, or light weight training. Let us help get you into a good routine! Email me at [email protected] and I will get you going! - Kristin Alexander
Let's Keep Moving!
We are thrilled to introduce a schedule of Zoom Fitness Classes taught by our very own ABAC instructors! We will send a weekly schedule. These classes are live (you can say hi to the instructors if you want!) and will be recorded, so they can be watched anytime in the future. They will be available on our new YouTube Channel. We are excited to have everything all in one place for you.

Along with our Facebook and Instagram pages, you can enjoy cool videos from our staff. We also hope everyone tries out the Les Mills link that is listed below. Les Mills has over 60 great classes for free to try.

Cooking With Mitch
Instead of swimming, I've spent a lot of time cooking the past month! Here's another one of my favorite healthy recipes.
Herb-Stuffed Meatloaf
- 1 lb. ground turkey or lean ground beef
- 2 tbsp. tomato paste
- 2 tbsp. water
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup chopped fresh basil
- 1 cup chopped onion
- ½ cup chopped red pepper
- 6 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 tbsp. Italian spices
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 2 tsp. salt
- Line a cookie sheet with foil and heat oven to 375°.
- Mix tomato paste and water together in a small bowl
- In a large bowl, mix together ground turkey, half of tomato paste mixture, egg, 1 tbsp. Italian spice, and 1 tsp. salt.
- Lay out a large piece of waxed paper and spread turkey meat onto it. Make a rectangle about 8" x 12" and about 1/4" thick
- Sauté onion, red pepper, and garlic over medium high heat until soft.
- Cover turkey meat with basil, then with sautéed vegetables.
- Use wax paper to help roll turkey up and put on cookie sheet. To reduce the amount of fat that collects at the bottom of the meatloaf, you can also place it on a rack set on top of the cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes.
- Add 1 tsp. Italian spice, garlic powder, and 1 tsp. salt to remaining tomato paste mixture. Brush on top of meat loaf and bake another 10 min
MyZone Challenges
Super congratulations to member Penny Malley who won our April MyZone Challenge! Penny gets a free personal training session and a MyZone belt to give to a friend. Way to go Penny!
Remember that your MyZone belts work even though you aren't at the club! Just wear your belt and make sure it connects to the app on your device and it will upload your workouts. And in May we have two more challenges to help keep you motivated and connected with each other.
The first is a global challenge put on by MyZone. All you have to do is earn at least 1300 MEPS in May AND put a photo on 5 different workouts via the app, and you are automatically entered into this one. They are giving away one hundred $100 Amazon gift cards. MyZone will notify the winners of this contest.
The second challenge is a club challenge. Wear your belt for the entire month of May and earn as many MEPS as you can. Every 100 MEPS will earn a raffle ticket, up to a maximum of 50 tickets. You also can earn BONUS tickets by putting a motivating comment on someone else's workout. You'll receive one bonus ticket for up to 10 comments you make. Before the end of the month, E-mail Mitch and let him know how many comments you made. One raffle winner will receive a free 30-minute massage once our spa reopens.
HAVE FUN!
After Stay-At-Home Is Lifted, What Do You Look Forward To?
There is no doubt that all of us are feeling anxious and ready to get out to enjoy the outside world and activities that we were accustomed to doing. So, I thought it would be fun to get a few members' responses to the question: "What is the first thing you look forward to doing when the quarantine is lifted?
Here are some of our members responses:
Cindy Kaminski: "Saturday Spin Class with Sara.
Claudia Llaurado: "Swimming."
Janet Windman: "Enjoying Happy Hour near the fire pit with her tennis team."
John and Amy Schroder: "Hugs with my kids and grandkids."
Carol Armstrong: "Tennis, and doing classes with my peeps, and saying, Good morning Sunshine, to Kat."
Darryl Armstrong: "Missing the rowing machine, shooting a game of pool with a wonderful group of guys we are blessed to have as friends and members at our club, and the coffee."
Amy Shields: "Seeing and being greeted by Kat and Miguel, and hopping on a plane to see my grandson."
David Johns: "Playing my trumpet with my bands and doing gigs, and tennis."
Tim Luken: "Having dinner out, and seeing my one year old granddaughter."
Lynn Walter: "I miss the pool very much, and playing ping pong and pool with Gary, and the Happy Hour music."
Lisa Rizzo: "Swimming in the pool and tennis."
Denise Allen: "It has been a super healing time for me and I hope to take my more stronger, powerful self to help others and my patients, and eliminate some of the fear during this time."
We all look forward to the day the club can reopen, even if it means a new normal for the time being. Let's all hang in and be kind to each other. We can do this! - Amy Kueffler
