Update From Nancy

 img

It has been amazing to have tennis players back at the club! Summer Blast starts for the kids on Monday, and we are eagerly awaiting SLO County to give us the green light to open the gym and the pools! Watch for an email from us this week announcing the opening date, and the new protocols we will be asking of each and every member.

While you will see your favorite staff faces when you return to the club (albeit wearing a face mask), there will be many physical changes to the facility. Many things have been cleaned, removed, repaired, and / or renovated. Staff has worked hard to stay safe, while still trying to make club improvements. Equipment has been moved around to provide physical distancing and as much utilization of outdoor spaces as possible. Our revised D&S Plan has been implemented (disinfecting and sanitizing), as advised by our expert cleaning consultants and the CDC. It will be more of a place to come work out than a social environment, for a while.

Now is a good time to make sure you have online access to Avila Bay Athletic Club & Spa services. You can do it on a computer or use our app on your phone. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] to get set up. You will need online access to reserve a pool lane / pool space, group fitness classes, tennis courts, all clinics, and possibly the workout rooms.

Please watch for the email announcing the opening date for the gym and pools. The email will also describe what will be available to everyone in our first phase of opening. We absolutely cannot wait to see everyone again!
-Nancy Terrell

A SPECIAL THANKS!!

THANK YOU again to the members that volunteered to continue to pay dues while we have been closed. Along with help from the SBA PPP Program, we have been able to continue to pay every single staff person their full pay, and keep the club operating. This kind of club has huge overhead expenses, and many of those can not just go away. We are definitely getting through it together!

Cooking With Mitch

 img

Here's another one of my favorite healthy recipes! I put this tuna salad in the refrigerator and use it to make salads or even sandwiches and wraps.

Mitch's Gourmet Tuna Salad

  • 2 cans tuna packed in water, drained well
  • 1 small fuji apple, cored and chopped into small pieces
  • ½ small red bell pepper, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 carrot, shredded
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped into small pieces
  • Leaves from celery, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. sweet onion, chopped into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp. dried cranberries, chopped
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper
  • Juice from ½ lime
  • 2 tbsp. plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp. yellow mustard
  • ½ tbsp. prepared horseradish (not creamed)
  • ½ tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  1. Place tuna, apple, bell pepper, carrot, celery, celery leaves, onion, and cranberries in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and toss well to mix.
  2. Squeeze lime juice over tuna mixture.
  3. Add in yogurt, mustard, horseradish, and vinegar and mix well.
  4. Let sit in refrigerator for 30 minutes for flavors to meld.
  5. Serve over spinach and top with thinly sliced bell pepper and pumpkin seeds (pepitas) for a healthy, simple salad.

June MyZone Challenge: Chasing The Blues Away!

 img

Congratulations to Margy Moynihan who won our May MyZone Challenge! Get ready for another fun MyZone Challenge in June! This time, only the blue zone will count for points. We'd like to encourage our members to try different types of exercises that might be out of their normal routine. You don't always have to go all out when you train! The blue zone is heart rates between 60 and 70 percent. This is a lower intensity exercise zone that you can perhaps do for longer periods of time. It will include activities like brisk walks, yard work, or even light sculpt classes and core classe. The challenge will run from June 10 - 30. You'll receive a raffle entry for every 100 MEPS earned, up to a maximum of 25 raffle entries, and we'll choose a winner in the first week of July. One randomly chosen winner will receive a MyZone belt for a friend , and a $50 credit on account!
