Congratulations to our new Member of the Month!

Ginny Browne
Congratulations to our new Member of the Month Ginny Browne! Ginny has been a member at Avila Bay Athletic Club & Spa since last summer, after joining for the second time. She has lived in this area most of her life, other than her college years at UC Berkley and University of San Francisco. Ginny has been in family law for 30 years. She has recently been able to work a little less, allowing her to put herself first and concentrate more on her health. Ginny kick started her time here at the club by joining in our 2-set reset last year. She loved everything about it from Chef Brian’s amazing meal plan, to Kristen and Danielle’s motivating fitness push for success and achievement. Ginny credits her fellow participants Sandy and Diane for keeping her motivated to keep pushing through. She also has big appreciation to our trainers Kristen and Danielle, for pushing her and keeping her on track with her fitness goals. Her favorite thing about the club is the staff and members. Ginny appreciates and loves all the staff from Kat at the front desk, Amy in membership, to Miguel and Lucia in Maintenance. Ginny is part of the B tennis team, and takes lesson from Mike Marquez our tennis director. When Ginny is not at the club or at work, she enjoys spending time at her home in Arroyo Grande with her husband, goats, and dog, Abilene. It is really inspiring how Ginny has pushed herself and kept motivated to stay on a path of getting healthy and fit. ABAC is so proud to call her our Member of the Month. Congratulations again to Ginny Browne!

Congratulations to our new Employee of the Month!

Kat Burns
Congratulations to Employee of the Month, Kat Burns! Kat has worked at the club for about two and a half years now. She spent most of this time in the Oasis Grille’s kitchen as a cook, and recently took on a new role as the daily opener at the front desk. Kat is a ball of energy and has really changed the atmosphere at the club with her kind, energetic, and goofy personality. She originally came to the area from Fullerton, Orange County, and has lived in the area for about 18 years now. Kat is married and has an adorable little three year old boy named Jase. She liked working in the kitchen, but really feels her new position suits her the best! Kat loves all the members and being able to get to know everyone. On her days off, she enjoys spending time at home with friends and family. We are so happy to have Kat at the front desk greeting all of our amazing members. Congratulations again Kat, we are so happy to have you here as part of the Avila Bay Athletic Club & Spa’s family!

Aquatics

img

Introducing Mitch Emerson as our new aquatics director!
I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself to everyone at the club: I’m Mitch Emerson, and I’d like to say thank you for all the warm welcomes I’ve received so far! Some of you may have seen me on the pool deck coaching the kids at Puma already—I’ve been with Puma at the Avila Bay Club since April 2016, and with Puma at other locations for almost 7 years prior to that. Before moving to the Central Coast in 2006, I was a Cal Poly graduate in Computer Engineering and spent 15 years working at Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks in the Bay Area. And now I’ve shed my technical background and am enjoying life as the aquatics director here at Avila Bay Club! I’m looking forward to bringing lots of fun and exciting new programs to all the members. I hope you will enjoy some of the things ahead and find more value in your club membership! If you see me on deck, don’t be shy to introduce yourself and ask any questions you might have. My passion truly is helping people to have fun and learn something new in the water. I look forward to meeting everyone and helping you enjoy your Avila Bay Club membership to its fullest potential!

Masters Swimming

One new thing that you will notice starting in March is that Masters swimming will become a free program to all club members. I want to encourage everyone to come out and give it a try! You don’t have to be an expert swimmer to participate—anyone who can swim comfortably for at least 30 minutes will be able to enjoy the program. You’ll get a great workout and build confidence in your skills. Starting on Tuesday, March 6, we will have Masters practices on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 9:15. I know that this may disappoint some of you who were coming at other times, but hopefully you’ll be able to accommodate this new time. Also, I hope this time will be available to a larger number of swimmers, especially the many of you who have never tried Masters before!

New in Aquatics

I’m also introducing two new programs for adults who want to step up their swimming skills. The first is a series of 4-hour workshops. During these workshops, we’ll record video of your stroke and give you personalized tips on how you can swim stronger and more efficiently. You’ll learn what muscles you use in different parts of the stroke as well as drills that will help you hone your technique. The first one of these will occur on Saturday, March 25th from 9:00am – 1:00pm and will focus on Freestyle. In the coming months, you’ll see workshops for other strokes as well. Whether you are a novice swimmer or an advanced chlorine junkie, you’ll learn something new in this workshop!

The second new program is intensive one-week clinics that go into details of stroke mechanics. You’ll learn about the different phases of the strokes, how to relax your body and increase your endurance, and how to recognize when you are swimming correctly vs. when you are making mistakes. You’ll get a whole repertoire of drills you can use as well as workout ideas. The first clinic will occur on Monday, March 13 through Friday, March 17 from 9:30 - 11:00am each day. This clinic will also focus on Freestyle. Again, anyone with beginner to advanced swimming skills will find this program educational as well as fun and motivating.

In order to provide a personalized experience, the clinics and workshops will have limited availability, so contact me in the aquatics office at x110 for more information and to reserve your spot early! As summer approaches, you’ll see more fun aquatics programs for our younger members as well! The first one you will see is a Junior Guards Boot Camp coming in April. If you have kids who plan to do Junior Guards at one of our local beaches this summer, this boot camp will get them ready! It will build their swimming endurance so that they can pass their timed test, and it also will give them an introduction to basic life guarding skills. Please e-mail me or call me if you are interested in finding out more about this fun program for your children!

From the Spa…

What is massage?
img
Massage is rubbing the soft tissues of the body, such as the muscles. It may be helpful in reducing tension and pain, improving blood flow, and encouraging relaxation. Massage therapists usually apply pressure with their hands, but they can also use their forearms, elbows, or feet. There are at least 80 different types of massage. Some are gentle, and some are very active and intense.

For example, Swedish massage is very gentle and is often used to promote relaxation, improve blood flow, and relieve muscle tension. The therapist uses long, gliding strokes and kneading and tapping techniques on the top layer of muscles in the direction of blood flow to the heart. This may also include moving the joints gently to improve range of motion.

Deep tissue massage is more active and intense. It is used to treat long-lasting muscle tension. The therapist applies slow strokes (with the fingers, thumbs, and elbows) using intense pressure to reach deeper layers of the muscles than those reached with a Swedish massage technique. Some people feel that massage works because the touch is healing. Touch also communicates a sense of caring.

Visit us for CHAIR MASSAGE in the lobby 9:30-12:30 Monday through Friday. We can move the massage chair in the conference room or a massage room if available.

From The Salon...

Book A Facial Today!
img
Despite the lack of sunshine, skin receives little reprieve from the harsh UV rays of winter. This coupled with the drying effect of wind and the lack of humidity in the air can leave your skin irritated, scaly, and sallow.

A facial works to counteract these effects in three ways: by improving circulation, providing deep cleansing, and restoring moisture and hydration.

Improving facial circulation stimulates our skin’s natural renewal, leaving your complexion younger looking and feeling smoother. Exfoliants, masks, and peels remove dead skin cells to reveal the new skin cells underneath. Exfoliation also allows ingredients to absorb more deeply into your skin, and boosts the benefits of your home care routine.

Schedule a facial with Christina and help your skin make a glowing transition from Winter to Spring!

St. Patrick’s Day at the club!

img

On Friday, March 17th everyone wear green! The Oasis Grille will be making Corn Beef and Cabbage for Dinner’s To-go, and offering $2 Guinness Beers!! We will be playing festive music in the lobby, and keep your eye out for the leprechaun’s “Pot o’ gold” hidden somewhere around the club, filled with St. Pat’s prizes! The festivities will take place all day during club hours. Hope to see you in your green!
