Congratulations to Romi Topp Our New Member of the Month!

imgCongratulations to Romi Topp as our member of the month! Romi, was born in Berlin, Germany ninety years ago. She met her future husband there shortly after the war had ended in 1945. He was there working with occupation forces. After he left Germany it took her 3 years to immigrate to America and in 1949 she finally immigrated and 3 days later married her fiancé after not seeing him for 3 years. (WOW). Romi doesn’t really miss Berlin but she does miss the beauty of the land and hills in Bavaria where her mother had moved to. She relocated to the Central Coast from Virginia in 2005 after losing her husband in 2002, to be near her daughter Melanie (also a member at ABAC) and joined our club. Romi loves tennis although she can’t participate anymore because the spirit is willing but the body isn’t. She was known to spend 8 hours a day on the courts between playing, practicing and teaching tennis. She was the state champion in North Carolina 2 years in a row. Romi has two daughters, one son, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She enjoys the central coast but misses the four seasons She has such a warm and generous smile you can’t help but smile and feel good when you are around her. Romi, we feel honored to have such a special lady as part of our membership. Keep on smiling!!!

Congratulations to our latest Employee of the Month, Kylie Anderson

imgHi I'm Kylie, an Arroyo Grande local currently attending school at Fresno State. Avila Bay Athletic Club is my summer job teaching swim lessons and life guarding. During the school year I head back to Fresno. I'm going into my 4th year there, double majoring in psychology and criminology. After Fresno State I plan to attend graduate school - somewhere a little closer to the beach. I love to be outdoors whether on the beach or in the water (really anywhere on our beautiful central coast). I also love working with kids and making sure they understand water safety.

Also, as we head into the hot days of late summer, it’s smart to keep in mind good ways to battle the heat on the tennis court. Here’s a list of things to pay attention on the hotter central coast days…

1) Play at cooler times, like early in the morning or in the evening
2) Come prepared with an ice chest filled with drinks and towels to cool off
3) In-between points, look for shady areas to grab 10 seconds of rest
4) Stay hydrated! Plan ahead and hydrate 48 hours before, and drink plenty of water during the matck
5) Replenish electrolytes with sports drinks or even by adding a dash of salt to your water
6) Wear white clothes that breath
7) Don’t forget sunscreen, hats and sunglasses!
8) Don’t be afraid to take breaks on the changeovers or if you’re feeling “iffy” on a hot day

Club Green!

imgThanks for all of your efforts to help us conserve water. By reducing our towel load, watering less, taking shorter showers, and converting all of our grass into synthetic grass, we reduced our water by 40 % in June and 29% in July! That is really amazing. We continue to put a big emphasis on being a green club. The whole staff talked about it at our last all-staff meeting, while reviewing even the simple things like what can and should be recycled. We hate to see cans and bottles in the trash, and realize that we need to have better containers around the club. That is a project in the works. We are looking for ways to encourage composting too. Our kitchen does it, and it would be nice for the whole club to be able to. Thanks again for doing your part by watching the shower times and recycling wherever possible!

From Kids’ Club….

We are getting back into the swing of things! September is here and the excitement of school fills the air. We now go back to our normal hours in Kids’ Club, which are: Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 12pm and 3:30pm to 6:30pm. On Fridays, 8:30am-12pm and 3:30-6pm. The weekends will remain the same. This means that we will be offering the unlimited pricing again. You may choose to pay $125 for the month and you can come as many times as you want, within the guidelines. If you are using Kids’ Club more than 20 hours in a month, then this is a great option for you. You can always ask about your usage and we can see if it is the right choice for you and your family.

Another friendly reminder that a parent MUST stay onsite at all times while a child is in Kids’ Club. Bob Jones is not part of our property and unfortunately you are not allowed to go for stroll while using Kids’ Club. Also, our two hour time limit per visit is always in effect to make sure that the children get a little break and don’t get too antsy. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email [email protected].

Parents’ Night Out is BACK!!!! We have had a break but we are ready to get back to the party. They will continually be the second Saturday of each month. This month’s Parent’s Night Out will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Bring your kiddos to come hang with all the fun ABAC staff while you get to take the night off. It’s one of the only times that you can leave the site to enjoy a dinner date, run some errands, or just hang at a quiet house for a few hours. Our night will consist of dinner, games, obstacle courses, crafts, and a movie. We use many areas of the club to do all of our fun activities and we settle down at the end of the night to a movie. Take advantage of this great offer. Please sign up at the front desk or in Kids’ Club to reserve your spot today. You can also email [email protected] to reserve your spot or get more information.

Come join Avila Bay Club Saturday, September 12th at the 25th Annual San Luis Obispo Heart & Stroke Walk/Run hosted by the American Heart Association. Festivities begin at 9am at the Avila Beach Promenade where you can check out sponsors and their booths before hitting the Bob Jones Trail to show your support. We would love to have you join our team to show support but we will also gladly accept donations for the cause as well. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans, we want to be able to help support a foundation that is trying to do something about it. Your donations raise funds for research and educational programs. You can sign up and/or make your donations in the lobby or contact Bre Boswell at [email protected]. Thanks in advance for all the support.

imgPlease help congratulate Zoe Wright as the new Kid of the Month! She is such a fun-loving girl that befriends everyone that comes into Kids’ Club. She is happy to play any game with anyone and that’s what we love about her. Thanks for bringing your sunshine into Kids’ Club every time.

Reminder – Adult Only Areas

Please help us enforce the adult only areas. No one under 16 is allowed in the large pool Jacuzzi, the sauna, or in the adult locker rooms. Some kids were spotted recently in the large pool Jacuzzi along with their parents, which makes us sad. We need the parents to help us enforce these rules, and really appreciate it when you do.

Wine Club

I can’t believe it either, but summer is already over and that can only mean one thing, Wine Club is back!! We hope everyone had a great summer and was able to get your fix at some of the summer happy hour concerts this past summer. I’d like to welcome Whitney McBride to the special event/ wine club family, as she will be taking over the wine club duties this year. Whitney comes to us with 10+ years of experience in the service industry and I couldn’t be more happy to have her on board. The first tasting of the year is September 18, 2015 from 6-8. Wine tasting is $20 per person and each wine will be paired with delicious Hors de’ Oeuvres prepared by the wonderful Oasis Grille! Free child care by reservation. Non-members welcome! Sign-ups are located in the lobby. Questions or reservations? Contact Whitney McBride at 805-595-7600805-595-7600 ext 113 or [email protected]....September winery TBA
